Family Visa: New, Renewal, and Cancellation for UAE Residents

Family Visa: New, Renewal, and Cancellation

If you are a UAE resident looking to bring your family members to the UAE, or you need to renew or cancel an existing family visa, this guide will walk you through the processes for new family visa applications, renewal, and cancellation in Dubai and across the UAE.

1. Applying for a New Family Visa

To sponsor your spouse, children, or parents to live with you in the UAE, you must apply for a new family visa. Here are the steps:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Minimum Salary: You must have a minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000 to AED 6,000 (depending on the emirate).

  • Valid Residency: The sponsor must hold a valid UAE residency visa.

  • Adequate Housing: You must provide a tenancy contract (Ejari) or proof of accommodation.

  • Health Insurance: Mandatory health insurance coverage for the sponsored family members.

Required Documents:

  • Sponsor's passport and UAE residency visa copy

  • Emirates ID of the sponsor

  • Marriage certificate (for spouse) or birth certificates (for children), attested and translated

  • Passport copies and passport-sized photos of the dependents

  • Tenancy contract (Ejari) or property ownership document

  • Salary certificate or employment contract

  • Health insurance proof for family members

Steps to Apply for a New Family Visa:

  1. Submit Entry Permit Application: You can apply through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or a typing center.

  2. Medical Fitness Test: Once the family member arrives in the UAE, adults must undergo a medical fitness test.

  3. Emirates ID Application: Submit an Emirates ID application and biometric details at the ICA or typing center.

  4. Visa Stamping: Finally, get the residency visa stamped in the passport of the family member.

2. Renewing a Family Visa in the UAE

A family visa in the UAE is typically valid for 1-3 years and must be renewed before it expires. The renewal process is simple but must be completed in a timely manner to avoid penalties.

Required Documents for Renewal:

  • Sponsor’s passport and residency visa copy

  • Family member’s passport and previous residency visa

  • Medical fitness test (for adults over 18 years)

  • Emirates ID application (renewal)

  • Tenancy contract (Ejari)

  • Salary certificate or employment contract

Steps to Renew a Family Visa:

  1. Medical Fitness Test: The sponsored family member must undergo a medical fitness test at an authorized center.

  2. Submit Visa Renewal Application: You can submit the application online through the GDRFA or at a typing center.

  3. Emirates ID Renewal: After completing the medical fitness test, apply for the Emirates ID renewal at the ICA or a typing center.

  4. Visa Stamping: Once the renewal is approved, the visa is stamped in the family member's passport.

Grace Period for Renewal:

The family member has a 30-day grace period after the visa expires to renew it. After this period, fines will apply:

  • AED 25 per day for the first 180 days

  • AED 50 per day for the next 180 days

  • AED 100 per day after one year of overstaying

3. Cancelling a Family Visa in the UAE

If the family member leaves the UAE permanently, or if they no longer meet the sponsorship requirements, you must cancel their visa. Here’s how to do it:

Required Documents for Visa Cancellation:

  • Original passport of the family member

  • Emirates ID of the family member

  • Sponsor’s passport and Emirates ID

  • Visa cancellation form (available at a typing center or GDRFA portal)

Steps to Cancel a Family Visa:

  1. Submit the Cancellation Application: You can submit the visa cancellation request online through the GDRFA or visit a typing center.

  2. Receive Cancellation Confirmation: Once processed, the visa cancellation confirmation will be issued. You will need this document for exit clearance if the family member is leaving the UAE.

  3. Final Exit or Grace Period: The family member can stay in the UAE for 30 days after the visa cancellation without incurring penalties. They must either exit the country or obtain a new visa during this grace period.

Cancellation Fees:

  • Visa Cancellation Fee: AED 100 to AED 150

  • Typing Center Fee: AED 50 to AED 100 (if applicable)
